Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Scott, I will report back in a week what I am observing. Are there many Protocol 1 firmware versions for my 7000? The serial # is: DX8300340. I got v.2.7 installed now, but I think I was using another Protocol 1 version a year ago. Incidentally (and this is conjecture), when I received my radio (stu...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

I didn't have any issues for about a week - thinking that I had the problem solved - but the glitch reared up its ugly head again back last night. I merely switched on the radio and almost immediately there was a considerable drop in the noise floor. The floor kept ebbing and flowing, just as it did...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

I switched the radio on Saturday morning (it stayed on for about 12 hours straight) with no ebb-and-flow in noise-floor on either RX1 or RX2 (sharing the same antenna among the receivers, just like before). Did the same this Sunday morning, and both receivers appear to be behaving "normally.&qu...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Scott, I appreciate your expert comments as always. Now, I have had the radio on all day to see if I can observe any ebb-and-flow in the noise floor. So far, the several times I have looked in on the radio, no abnormal drops in noise floor :) . Will see if the connector seating (and other tugging an...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Got the boards and the aluminum plate to slide in "unison," after disconnecting a slew of connectors (apart from SMA ones), taking oodles of photos along the way. This was prompted by the results from my first attempt late last night and the observation this morning where neither RX1 nor R...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Don't like the way the ribbon cable is "kinked". See image below. This is the cable between J16 (I believe this is on the Orion board) and J2 that is on the small board with PTT IN/OUT, LINE INs, DIG INs, OC outputs and L and R Speaker connection. Hard to reach some of the SMA connectors i...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Will work on the SMAs first, hoping that will do the trick. Do the boards just slide out (in case I have to go that route) so that I could use a non-conducting "stick" to tap on spots? I would imagine they will, provided that whatever cables, ribbons or otherwise here are, have plenty of s...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Mark, It was great meeting you today. I really enjoyed seeing you and I am very grateful to you for having spent time with me, in an effort to get to the bottom of it. Perhaps we do it again some time soon :) ! What I did after returning home from Mark's was, I switched the radio back on and, as usu...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Mark,

I DO look forward to the investigation and I am grateful to you for the very kind offer.

I will also do some "banging" tonight as per Scott's great suggestion

Joe put me up to it and I will be probably be bringing beverages. :D

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Joe,

W5WC , Doug, had my radio in his shack twice and wasn't able to reproduce the issue, that's why.

Mark's offer is indeed very gracious, but I also have a life apart from ham radio and so I won't always be able to
do what I should be doing.

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Scott,

Fair statement.

Tell me, could the FPGA (the array is on the Orion board, correct?) be at fault?

Why wouldn't my Kenwood not exhibit this issue, using the same antenna?

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Tried again this morning as the temperature in the shack is much lower and until now, lower temp has been the "saving grace." After about 30 minutes of monitoring, both RX1 and RX2 exhibited a very low noise floor. So, this appears to be getting progressively worse. How many separate board...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Tried another PC (laptop) and the same exact issue could be observed several minutes into monitoring, a carbon copy of the ebb-and-flow, on both RX1 and RX2. Same antenna, same band. At one point, I thought that perhaps I should include Thetis and The OpenHPSDR (in Roaming) sub-folder in exclusions ...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

No joy. :( Rolled back to Protocol 1 and both RX1 and RX2 exhibit the same abrupt drop of noise floor after about 5 minutes. Floor sinks and bounces back to "normal" over a period of 1-2 minutes and this keeps happening once it starts. For the first 5 minutes, all looked good but I got my ...

Chris,

I am glad you haven't dozed off at the litany of questions and exchanges on this  !

No, I haven't tried any other Protocol versions, but as Scott is suggesting, it may be time to try Protocol 1 for a look-see and it that remedies this anomaly I am fine with that :) !

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

I read you Scott!

One more "foolish" question. Will the latest Thetis version (2.9.0.8 - Pre-release) care whether I run P1 or P2? I assume that doesn't matter.

Thanks. Will do the experiment.

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Scott, If 82F ambient is too high constitutes a serious flaw in the design and if this sort of temperature is "too high," then I think Apache-Labs would be encouraged to specify proper operating temperature. I live in Texas, so 82F is nothing untoward whatsoever. It is almost "cool&qu...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Mark, I sure value your kind suggestion and I may take you up on it :) ! My email is good on qrz.com. As for the mains voltage, it is in the range of 121.2V-122.0V, according my Fluke 107 meter (as of 9AM today, Sunday). Will check what the swing is on a weekday too. Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Shouldn't the DC power supply (Astron) be able to deal with minor swings in the mains voltage? And, no, I haven't been monitoring the mains, but did at some point think that perhaps my DC supply wasn't up to the task. Shouldn't I see a very low DC voltage displayed at bottom of the Thetis GUI though...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Tried it yesterday (monitoring for roughly 30 minutes) using the same antenna. After about 10 minutes, the noise floor went from around -119 down to -132 (occurred 3 times) before "stabilizing" and going back to -119. Decided to do it again this morning. After 30 minutes, no changes in noi...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Gary, I used the same antenna for both receivers, sharing ("common) the ADC. I went by what you had suggested.

Radio is ANAN 7000 DLE MKII (black front) that I've had for almost 2 years. It had been working flawlessly for about 1.5 years and it started acting up only a few months ago.

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Mark, I know what you are saying, but regardless of the scaling (it is a tad different, I noticed), the noise floor sinks very low, AND, the floor goes up and down so even with slightly different scaling (I will make them the same), it is obvious that something isn't right. Thanks! Juha UPDATE: Matc...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Mark, RX1 had an End-Fed-Half-Wave connected and RX2 is using an inverted V dipole at 33'. I will do the "swap" and post tomorrow. When it comes to signal strength, depending on where the station is, there can be a difference of 2-3 S units when I bounce between the 2 antennas. 73, Juha UP...

Re: RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

Gary,

No, the box is not checked.

Thetis version you can see at bottom of my post.

Again, I wish I could have attached a brief video clip but can't. The noise-floor ebbs and flows ion RX1 whereas it stays "steady" on RX2.

Scott asked me the same question many weeks ago.

RX1 acting up whereas RX2 is not

"Last gasp" effort to understand why this is happening. To me, it would seem that there is something wrong with RX1. As I had reported quite extensively many weeks ago, RX1 exhibits a strange anomaly - noise floor dropping and then bouncing back several times in a row (regardless of band o...
