Motu M2 Win 11 Buffer Size

Postby KC4MNE » Tue Mar 14, 2023 11:28 am

Hi

Anybody using the Motu M2 directly connected to thetis without voicemeeter potato using the M2's asio driver? Tried using it that way in a new computer setup and I set the sample rate to 48000 and the buffer to 512 on both thetis and the m2. However as soon as vac was turned on the sample rate on the m2 would automatically change to 4096, while the rate in thetis remained at 512, interestingly enough It would work. Tried other sample rates with the same result. Installed voicemeeter potato and set the motu to 512 and VM recognized the setting, then set thetis to 512 to voicemeeter and it worked as well. However I wanted to eliminate the use of voicemeeter. Any idea what is going on?

I have the motu m4 and this happens as well. It must be something going on with the auto sync function. I run at 192,000 sample rate and 64 buffer but when Thetis starts (vac), the m4 ratchets up on step in buffer size. I just run it that way as all seems to work fine.

Note also Vin's comments in this quite recent thread: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4546

He's kicked his MOTU to the curb and replaced it with an M-Audio.

All of these USB interfaces use the same or similar chipsets. The real differences are in the quality of the driver software. I've had the opportunity to use Behringer, Focusrite, Steinberg and Presonus equipment. The Behringer and Presonus drivers are very good. The Steinberg and Focusrite drivers were not. It seems we can now add MOTU to the naughty list, and M-Audio to the nice list.

Yep, my M2 does the same thing direct, no VM. It drove me nuts as it was overflowing a bunch and cutting out audio. So I switched to M-audio Air and no problem at all. So to Wu2o's point must be something to do with certain builds of Windows 11 not liking the drivers. Others are using the Motu with no issues so I'm at a loss, too bad, because I really liked the metering on the Motu.

Hi

If the March 26, 2021 88030 driver is used the device works perfect and does not change the buffer size. Driver Version on the motu app will show version 4.0.8.803. ALL the other newer drivers will not work. 88030 is how motu labels the driver on their download page.

The struggle I just went through with M2 and Win 11 had to do with MSFT installing its own driver. That worked ok in Win 10 but they broke something. So after pulling all the MSFT provided ASIO drivers and reinstalling the Motu driver and in turn reinstalling Voicemeeter, ASIO functions stably again.

I went from Focusrite (RF issues too) to Motu due to software/driver instability. For me the Motu has been very solid until I did a dumb in-place major version Win 11 upgrade.

There are so many variables on a user's system that it''s hard to say that one is better than another.

I've had no issues with the M2 and Win 11 after the initial headache.

Very good information, thanks for sharing. I will give it try and see if I can get stability with a 64kb buffer size with my shelved M2.
