TCI & F/H mode in JTDX not working.

Postby Dave30019 » Thu Mar 31, 2022 12:44 pm

I implemented TCI in Thetis (21k9) and successfully setup Log4OM & JTDX and have been running fine for 2 weeks. Yesterday I tried F/H mode for the first time and it did not work. I switched back to VAC and it worked fine in F/H mode.
Setup with TCI; in F/H it goes into transmit for about 1 sec and stops, VFO shows 24.910.500. I have the freq set to 24.910 in JTDX. Since the vf0A did not return to 24.910 I could not hear the DX station. I tried a few things, restarted Thetis, JTDX verified all settings, did not help. Went back to VAC and all was ok in F/H mode.
I know there is just a small set of TCI commands in Thetis so I thought this may be the problem.
Is anyone having a similar issue?

You don't say what version of JTDX you are using.
160-rc1 fixed some of the timing problems with Thetis.

Dave bear in mind that TCI on Thetis does not carry audio so you should stick to VAC for now. I have been testing JTDX using TCI lately but I find it occasionally causes JTDX to crash on frequency change and I have not been able to nail down what the issue is. Others have used Thetis and TCI without problems.

I'm using JTDX ver 2.2.159; Thetis ver. 21k9. I'm using audio VAC, I understand that TCI audio is not implemented in Thetis yet.
JTDX & Thetis runs fine in regular mode just not F/H mode when TCI is configured.

Thanks for the info.

Edit: Sorry, I switched back to Virtual serial port cat control and F/H mode worked fine.

As far as I can tell all that should happen is the following (running as a hound) :

fox tx below 1000Hz
hounds reply > 1000Hz
when fox calls you, you reply at fox's frequency so vfo B split is moved

single RX1 split works FB, so should work in the F/H setup. I will keep an eye out for a DX station running F/H and check what is happening. As Mike mentions it could be an issue with jtdx when running TCI (although more than likely a Thetis issue).

Hi Richie FYI I've had random shut downs of JTDX when changing frequency using TCI, not sure if it has an y bearing on this but thought I'd mention it just in case.

Please use the 160-rc1 version I posted earlier.
There have been more changes made but not release yet in JTDX.

Tony, if you turn on the logging for TCI in Thetis, you can view what happened just before a JTDX shut down. The logging will keep the last 500 entries. It might let us know what is going on. You can close the logging window, with log checked and it will still log the info.

Edit: also, I must add, I have used v2.2.159 extensively recently, for 5-6 hour stints, without issue. I run without split however, so that might be the problem. Something to note, is that if you don't uninstall the old version before moving to a new version, you may have multiple shortcuts with the same name and might actually be running in older version (check the about/title bar).

@Richie, thanks, I did not notice there was a log function. I'll test again with this.

@Mike, yes I am running the 160 rc1

Ok just got JTDX to crash, it took a good few frequency changes before it happened . Here are last few TCI log entries.

> vfo:0,1,50312000;
> if:0,1,0;
> dds:1,50312000;
< vfo:0,1,50312000;
> vfo:0,1,50312500;
> if:0,1,0;
> dds:1,50312500;
< vfo:0,1,50312500;

JTDX is still showing as a background task running in task manager. I'll now change from "split" to "fake it " in JTDX and test again.

Edit: As no TCI message is sent in "fake it mode" when DF is changed using JTDX waterfall it will take me a bit longer to test this running real QSO's

yeah it is a jtdx TCI issue tbh. I've done loads of testing in 159, hammering split etc, and it crashes very easily. However, a test app in place of jtdx copes with it no problem. Hopefully they will resolve the issues and probably related to the potentially non sequential nature of TCI, in other words replies to commands may come back to jtdx out of order, and it might not handle that, not sure.

Thanks Richie. I'll stick with "fake it" for now, it works just fine as far as i can tell.

@W9mdb Mike, are you using split or fake mode in JTDX?

Rig Split and I don't have any problem switching bands since JTDX 160-rc1

Testing with Richie's latest test pre release. Using "Emulate SDR3 protocol" with JTDX set to "Split operation Rig" gives JTDX rig control error "TCI failed set split". JTDX no longer crashing as it did before. Edit: However using "Emulate SunSDR2Pro" I can get JTDX to shut down as before

Thetis log (expert SDR3 emulation): TCI shows
> device:ANAN7000D;
> protocol:ExpertSDR3,1.8;
> vfo:0,1,50313500;
> if:0,1,0;
> dds:1,50313500;
< vfo:0,1,50313500;
< split_enable:0,true;

What settings do you have? And you are running JTDX-160-rc1?

Mike using JTDX 160 rc1. Only difference I see from yours is poll interval , is that critical?

Poll interval shouldn't matter -- I was running 1 second and just turned it down to .5 sec due to another application I'm running that need JTDX to respond quicker on an external frequency change.
You could try 0.5s but I doubt it will help.

My computer is pretty beefy. 3.4Ghz 16 cores doing around 5% usage with everything running.

Testing JTDX 160 rc2 now with "split" enabled in JTDX

"changelog:

- TCI: attempt to fix some segfaults
- TCI: message handling improvement
- TCI: split fix"
