Power supply availability for new Anan 8000 G2 1000w model.

Postby VE3INH » Sun Jul 30, 2023 3:54 am

Just wondering if Anan Apache Labs will be making a new 40 amp 50 vdc power supply available to customers who are considering purchasing the new G2 1000w version of the model 8000?

From what I have been able to understand, the only 50vdc power supply currently available from Apache Labs is the 20 amp version which was only sufficient to power the old 200w output model 8000.

An additional question I have is whether a 40 amp 50 vdc supply is sufficient to provide 100% duty cycle or is the G2 8000 even capable of 100% duty cycle in transmit?

The rig is limited to 500W for high-duty mode like FT8. But duty cycle has nothing to do with how much power the rig needs. Anytime you push the 1000W you need the amperage to support it regardless of duty cycle.

The new power supply can do 120V or 240V but is limited to 500W on 120V due to more amps being required at the lower voltage.

You need the 240V supply to do 1000W for CW or phone.

There is no such thing as an 8000 G2, regardless of power output capability.

True -- they abandoned the 8000 version due to inability to get parts.
It's now the ANAN-G2-1K they are flogging.

Thank you for your quick response. Your reply makes a great deal of sense.

I hope you don't mind answering a few additional questions that cropped up in my mind, given the fact that there are no photos or detailed physical descriptions on the power supply on the Anan web page. The questions are as follows:

1) Does the power supply consist of a circuit card where the end user is required to house it or does it come as a complete ready to use device in a proper cabinet with metering?

2) Is it a switching or linear power supply?

3) If it is a switching supply; as I suspect it is; does it have any provisions to mitigate various noise products with a front panel control for frequency offset?

4). Does the power supply simply use heat sinks to dissipate heat or is there some type of temperature controlled or fixed speed fan system for cooling?

I got some more information.

The dimensions are 30cm L x 8.5cm W x 4 cm H
Fans are temperature controlled.
It's a non-standard Meanwell supply with modifications to make it RF quiet and quieter fans.

Thank you again for your prompt response with photos and dimensions.

Please excuse me if I misunderstood your statement:

"It's a non-standard Meanwell supply with modifications to make it RF quiet and quieter fans."

I am not sure if you meant to imply that "modifications to make it RF quiet and quieter fans" have already been made to the power supply or if the end user needs to make those modification after purchase?

Also; I was contemplation whether it might be useful to purchase two power supplies and run them in parallel so that neither of them are stressed out by running at full capacity when the transceiver was transmitting at 1000 watts output in order to extend the longevity of the supplies. My only trepidation about taking such a course of action would be the difficulty of matching the voltage output of each supply so that they each carry half the load. The reason I say this is due to the fact that I used to work as a telecom technician and had to regularly maintain multiple -48 volt 100 amp paralleled rectifiers. trying to balance them to share equal loads was always a very touchy affair.

Of course the modifications are already made.
The power supply is designed to handle full power -- 48V at 40A is 1,920 watts and Meanwell power supplies are very efficient at around 90% so plenty of power. The 1000W on the rig is only for CW or Voice -- not FT8 for example which is limited to 500W so doesn't push the power supply in either mode. Since the power supply is rated for 48V/40A that should mean it can do that 100% duty cycle -- though the fans will have to work a lot harder. It's just that the rig itself can't do 100% duty cycle at 1000W.

I don't see why would need a 2nd supply.

Thank you again Mike.

That puts my mind a lot more at ease in terms of making a future purchase. Very much appreciate your timely and informative feedback to all of my questions.
