Why am I seeing this?

Postby JJ4SDR » Thu May 18, 2023 1:20 am

Lately, I have been seeing a pop-up (after clicking on the Thetis icon on my desk-top) to the effect that the radio isn't (hardware) connected or powered on, but it is. This is something rather new and I can get it all working after I restart my PC (powering down/power cycling the radio won't help).

Any thoughts?

I've seen this a couple of times before. I found it happened if I start Thetis too soon after switching on the Anan. Maybe the Anan takes some time to initialize and communicate with the PC. If you wait a bit longer after switching on your Anan before starting Thetis the problem will go away.

It could be a lot of things. Not enough information in your first post to do anything better than guess.

Do you really have to reboot the PC, or is that just a superstitious response to the problem?

How is the ANAN connected to the PC, direct or via a switch? Dedicated NIC? What type of IP addressing are you using?

I wait long enough for the hardware in the ANAN to be up and running before I click on the Thetis icon on my desktop.

ANAN is connected directly to the PC (static IP), no dedicated NIC.

Again, this has started happening only recently.

Confirm that the static IP's in both the PC NIC and the ANAN are still correct.

Confirm that power management on that NIC is turned off.

If that all checks out OK, try disabling Windows firewall. If that NIC is only connected to the ANAN you can disable the firewall on that specific interface completely (but leave it turned on for WiFi).

Not sure, but when using the Bootloader (to assign static IP to the radio, as I have done successfully previously), the utility finds the board in the ANAN and also displays the MAC address, but after I restart Thetis, nothing works and no MAC address is to be seen. See below.

For some reason, I had assigned the static IP address for the NIC incorrectly while thinking that I had found the problem ;)

Decided to start from scracth (backups made)

Postby JJ4SDR » Thu May 25, 2023 2:24 am

I backed up the OpenHPSDR Program Folder and the OpenHPSDR Roaming Folder before deleting those 2 folders (Thetis still showed up in Apps, so I also uninstalled Thetis there), wanting to see if starting from scratch would make a difference. I won't go into the issues I had been observing, including sudden audio drop-off/outs on several bands, regardless of antenna used. W5WC wasn't able to reproduce the issue!

Note, I did upgrade to Protocol 2 firmware a long time ago and I didn't mess with any of that but just wanted to re-install Thetis.

Now, after a successful installation of Thetis (2.9.0.8, pre-release that I have been using for quite a long time), I powered up the ANAN (ANAN, PC and router plugged into an unmanaged switch as before), clicked on the Thetis icon. Oddly enough (I have never seen that error message pop up before, after previous successful install), I get an error message suggesting that the radio isn't powered up or connected.

What gives?

Juha:

Moved your post. It's effectively a dupe of your previous post, it has nothing to do with Thetis per se, it's another network connection problem. So now it's here, where it belongs, back with your most recent network problem post.

"What gives?" you say? Once again, not nearly enough information to solve your problem. We can't push you out of your chair, grab your mouse, and start looking at your setup to see what you did wrong. So you have to tell us what you did in the same level of detail as if we could actually grab your mouse.

It's worth noting that every time I or we or whoever starts asking you for more info you immediately find your simple mistake and you are working again. So I would encourage you to sit down and look at all your settings for a simple mistake, like the one just the other day where you accidentally had the NIC address set wrong.

Well, it is just a hobby, nothing earth-shattering and I guess I am better off going back to being an appliance operator and sell the ANAN. It was fun while it lasted
