Postby ww1ssradio » Fri Jan 13, 2023 12:12 pm

Can the Anan 10 be flashed with the Protocol 2 Firmware so I can run it with SDR Console??

The answer is "Yes, but..."

The "Yes" part: https://community.apache-labs.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=3310

The "but..." part: P2 firmware builds are not as reliable on the older hardware as they are on the newer hardware. You may or may not have immediate success with P2 firmware that runs well on the 10 that you have. Start with the latest version, of course, but you may have to work your way through the various versions in Post #1 of the above topic to see if there is one that runs well for you.

Also, be sure you are really talking about an ANAN-10, not the 14-bit ANAN-10E. If it's really the later, then see the corresponding ANAN-10E topic instead for the 10E P2 firmware.

You should use HPSDR Bootloader.

Complete directions are in this topic (conveniently tacked at the top of the firmware discussion forum): https://community.apache-labs.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2333

Be sure to have a copy of the correct P1 firmware handy in case the P2 firmware doesn't work out. Directions for downloading P1 firmware are included in those directions.

You must be meticulous in following the directions. You can't brick the ANAN, but you can fail to load firmware. There are a great many topics in this forum started by people who did not follow the directions perfectly and it is always easy stuff like "Did you remember to cycle power after removing/replacing jumper" and basic things like that. So do take some care during this process ;)

Well after running protocol 2 for a day and a half . . . which I really liked . . .

Started getting Sequence Error 259 DDC1 mic

Had to go back to Protocol 1

Unless you were getting audio glitches you did not have to revert.

If you were getting audio glitches you could try an older version of P2 firmware. I might do a better job of meeting timing on your specific serial number ANAN-10.

It also could be a temperature thing. Try putting a fan on the ANAN-10.

I tried all the different P2 firmware updates on the link you posted here. Thought it was thermal at first but even tried it from a stone cold unit after letting it sit for a few hours.

Where do I find s/n . . . Mac is C0-A8-64-BA-0-01

Had no audio dropouts at all.

Just ignore the seq errors, then.

Units were not serialized until the 7000 and 8000 series.

but what happens is Thetis stops and the power light on the radio fades from off to dim and I have to turn off radio and restart thetis.

I just put the latest protocol 2 back on there and I saw the error pop up but the radio and Thetis kept running. Then it popped up again and stopped.

You didn't fully explain that previously. It's too bad P2 will not run reliably on your hardware.

Will this latest card from Apache Labs work with protocol 2

Open HPSDR Hermes (14 bit ADC, EP3C25) Transceiver Card (Assembled & Tested . . . Gonna replace the one in the ANAN 10

There is no guarantee that card will work, either.

There isn't even a guarantee that P2 will work on literally any Apache hardware, from the original Hermes to the latest Orion boards. It does, however, seem much more reliable on the later designs, like the Orion in the 200D, and the Orion MKII's and MKIII's in the 7000, 8000 and Andromeda series.

The problem is that achieving timing closure for GigE has been difficult because the open source firmware development community does not have 20 examples of every version of hardware from the Hermes to the Orion MKIII to test with, doesn't have a thermal chamber to characterize timing closure over temperature, and is restricted to the free version of Quartus development software.

Hi Steven,

Your comment about the front power LED going dim made me think of
a common problem with the early Hermes/Angelia boards running GigE.

There's a resettable fuse F3 for 5 Volts that may be getting tripped.

Check this thread out for what some folks did with their Angelia's F3.
https://community.apache-labs.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2777&hilit=fuse+f3

You could replace it with a higher current fuse or with a wire.

F3 on the Hermes is on the back. To get at it fairly easily, remove the front plate,
slide out the bottom plate, and F3 should be accessible.

Excellent point, Rick! I had forgotten about that, which is dumb  because my Angelia has the F3 modification.

Thanks . . . I will check that out . . . What I also did was install a version of Protocol 2 which limits the lan speed to 100 mbps Hermes_Protocol_2_v10.3 firmware.

So far so good . . . Been running for an hour now . . . We'll keep the fingers crossed. :ugeek: :ugeek: :ugeek:
