Display Port

Postby Trucker » Thu Apr 27, 2023 4:58 pm

I just bought a nice, used Dell desktop pc that has an 9th Generation I7 9700 cpu in it.
It also comes with two Display port, video ports on it as well. Is there any problems using the Display Ports for video with Thetis? My slightly older Dell Precision i7 6700 with Intel graphics has worked well for me until yesterday evening. The power supply died. I ordered another power supply. But, I am thinking of relegating the older pc as a backup. The dealer here had a great deal on the newer Dell that I couldn't pass up.
My main concern was how well the onboard Display Port video would work with Thetis.
I am thinking it should be fine. But, only found one post that had any details. But, didn't really answer my questions.

There's absolutely nothing special about DisplayPort where app's that run on your PC are concerned. All any app sees is the Windows graphics driver, it has no idea about that hardware is being used. You will be fine.

Thank you once again Scott. I suspected as much. But, I wanted to be sure as I was not certain it would make a difference. I think the 9th Gen i7 9700 should have more of an impact. The young man at the shop said I should see an improvement in performance compared to my older pc. We shall see!

Thetis likes cores, lots and lots of cores. Right now I'm on a dinosaur, an i7-7700k. Someday I wish to own something with 16 cores or more.

Picked up the "new to me" Dell OptiPlex 7071 with the i7 9700 8 core cpu and Display Port video output. The shop where I got the computer gave me a HDMI to Display Port cable. Absolutely no problems. The CPU usage dropped from 10% on average with my old i7 6700 ( 4 core) to 1% to 3% cpu usage using the default settings in Thetis v2.9.0.8. Eight cores definitely make a difference!
I still need to calibrate the PA and add the Skins and I should be back in business.

Spoke too soon. I checked Task Manager and it shows 10 to 13% for Thetis. Yet Thetis only shows 1 to 3% cpu usage. With the previous computer Task Manager and Thetis both showed the same cpu usage. I wonder what is different?

Thetis, and other programs, don't show correct CPU usage on Windows 11

I switched to the old pc, which is also running Windows 11 Pro, ( same as the newer one) and the displayed cpu usage in Task Manager is the same as shown in Thetis. The newer computer is an 8 core, i7 9700. The older pc is a 4 core i7 6700.
I don't know if the processors being 4 vs 8 core is the difference or not. The 4 core i7 6700 can do 8 threads according to the intel website. The i7 9700 ,8 core, cannot do more than 8 threads.
According to the same website.
The i7 9700 can run faster than the i7 6700. So, maybe that is it. One thing for sure, no overflows or underflows so far after running all night on the newer computer.
