Who can repair my 7000 [silver]

Postby K5WAZ » Fri Oct 21, 2022 12:29 am

I have been trying to get my 7000 back on the air after 2 years off & a 1700 mile move. Now it seems that the radio will not transmit. Probably broke something!

Who can I contact to make repairs?

Before you pack the rig up and ship it out for repair you might want to investigate whether the problem is related to a software setting or ethernet issue.

Just sayin'.

The best way to get in touch with Doug is as follows:

dwigley@apache-labs.com or support@apache-labs.com

However, I agree with Mark. Justin: maybe you could provide us with more information on the trouble you are having? Does the unit receive OK?

Ok, my thoughts as to the radio operation & why it needs someone to look at it.

The receiver works very well, all bands all modes both with VAC and or the headset plugged directly into the radio. When trying to adjust the transmitter into a dummy load for the original setup of Thetis v2.9.0.6X64 the tune “button” would not make the radio transmit no matter the power level selected. The panafall display indicated that the radio was transmitting. I saw no rf output on either the screen TX Meter nor the outboard watt meter.

At that point I plugged a mic in and tried to get rf out with modulation. There was indication on the panafall that I had good audio output from the mic but still no rf output indication on-screen nor the outboard meter.

My thought at that point was maybe my installation of Thetis has a problem. I then went to OpenHPSDR mRX PSv3.4.9. I found the exact same problems with it as Thetis. With both programs when in the tune mode or using a mic I could hear relays clunk in the radio,

This radio has been a box for well over 1.5 years and has traveled over 1700 mile in a trailer behind my truck. I do not believe that has anything to do with its transmit problem.

I have checked all I know how to regarding the software locking out the transmitter. No Joy. Maybe you guys might have another idea.

That's all good news. It means the problem is probably very simple. It might be just a loose coaxial cable between the Orion MKII TX connector and the RF board. It's not very difficult to drop the rear panel and inspect for loose coaxial cables, or any other sort of loose cables. You just have to remove the six rear panel fasteners and the nuts on the BNC connectors. Loose cables are an easy fix and if that's the problem you could potentially save a lot of time and hassle.

That will be great if the problem is only a loose connection. It has been handled a few times over the move. I will open it up and have a look. Thanks for the insight.

Thanks for the contact info if I can't find anything loose.

Removed the top and bottom covers and saw that the BNC connectors are mounted to the PA board no user accessible connections. I did check all the visible coax connectors none were loose. Reconnected the radio and no joy on transit.

I guess I'll contact Doug & see what his thoughts are.

Thanks for his email.
