Really loving the new meters !

One thing occurred to me is that using an amp and pure signal.....is there anyway of using the pure signal feedback signal to drive a meter and scaling it so that I can look at the actual station output signal ?

Just calibrate your panadapter!

The value is roughly the attenuation of your coupler, maybe you have to adjust a few dB.
Scale the tx-display and make sure DUP is enabled.

How do you make sure that a meter floats (perhaps that isn't the correct term as I want the meter to stick to the GUI) on top of the main GUI? When I switch from GUI to surf the net, the meter shows up but not the GUI. How do I avoid the meter showing up (with no Thetis GUI visible) when I am in "surfing mode?"

In the upper right corner of the container there is a selection you can see that looks like a bulletin board pin. Clicking on it, you can cycle through different settings that allow you to pin the container where you want it to stay.

An update from Richie

Postby w-u-2-o » Fri May 12, 2023 2:38 pm

Hello all:

Richie asked me to post this update on what he's got going on. He's pushing to get out another release before he takes a well-deserved summer break from development. Please read carefully below.

Thanks,

Scott

After the push to get the pre-release 2.9.0.8 out, with the meter stuff,
I have basically run out of real life free time to do anything at the
moment.

That being said :

1) I did start working on some housekeeping code a few weeks ago
relating to saving/loading meter config which I hope to finish in the
coming weeks. It will require people to re-lay out their meters, but it
fixes a bunch of orphaned data in the database related to deleted meter
containers. The side effect of this fix/change will be that it will fix
the DB import/export problem for the meter config.

2) I need to code up the import of PA data, which is somewhat related
and similar to 1)

3) I am tempted to change the directX use of the video component to be
shared between the spectral display and meter containers. This will
obviously need testing, but may fix a few issues that people are
reporting to me (privately).

4) try to catch up with some of the known issues posted to my github

To that end, I am unsure when I can complete this, it is probably a day
or so of coding for 1+2+3, but finding free time where I can get some
decent free time is proving to be an issue right now. I have other
things going on and radio/thetis slides down the priority list
unfortunately.

I will make a concerted effort to finish 1,2,3 before the end of the
month, but beyond that I can see myself stepping back again for the
middle of the year until autumn/winter arrives.

I am hoping Ritchie starts with (unless there is a good reason) the fork that Steve G7KLJ has, it seems like some good work was done there and it would be nice for things to come back together ...

I realize Richie has very limited time. And I am so thankful for the fantastic progress and improvements that he has made recently with regard to metering, containers, and UI flexibility and appearance.

But there are some bugs related to the handling of the RX2 VFO and its container. Perhaps they're already part of Richie's plans. I will try to explain below.

I made an RX2 (TRX2) container with "Vfo Display" in it. I will list the bugs, or behaviors that I think are wrong, below in bold text.

When I turn on RX2, the RX2 container appears, with "VFO A" and "VFO B" VFOs shown. I would have expected only one VFO to exist in the RX2 container, labeled "RX2." With RX2 active, I can tune around and see the RX2 frequency change in the "VFO B" section of the RX2 container. But there's a spurious VFO A section in the RX2 container.

When I turn off RX2, the RX2 frequency is transferred to the RX1 VFO B frequency. Instead, the RX2 frequency should stay with RX2, and not overwrite the RX1 VFO B frequency. If I turn RX2 back on, RX2 starts up, but the original RX1 VFO B frequency is not restored, and is lost.

If I set up a Split & MultiRX situation on RX1, and then turn on RX2, Split is turned off but the MultiRX button remains in an ON state. RX2 inherits the RX1 VFO B frequency, but the RX1 VFO Sub frequency changes to what seems to be a random frequency. (For example, the Split MultiRX test I set up was VFO A 7168.00, VFO B 7218.00. When I turned on RX2, the the RX1 frequency was transferred to RX2, and the RX1 VFOB frequency changed to VFO Sub at 7359.999 < I've no idea where that frequency came from.)

These behaviors seem incorrect and buggy.

I don't think that's going to happen. It appears this is an effort to wrap up work in progress and no more. That would create a lot more work because he'll want to review every change.

Hey all,

I have updated the github repo and made a final release of 2.9.0.8. If there are any big problems/gotchas let me know via github issues. Please read the change log. Invites to a few others have been sent out to my repo so fixes/changes can be made if needed.

I wont be doing any more to Thetis for a while, but will check in from time to time to see how things are going. My original changes started a few years ago with a friend asking for a quick modification, which seemingly spiralled out of control  Also, many thanks to Ernst and others who have run 'in the works' versions, tracking and finding bugs/issues.

(note: This update will cause existing meter config to be lost)

Agree 100%. The VSQL (Applied lightly) plus NR2 is as close to full quieting FM as you can get on HF SSB. This addition from Warren Pratt to his WDSP library is simply amazing.
I don't see how it could be topped.
Thanks again Ritchie for activating this feature to the Squelch in Thetis.

I have encountered something I wasn't expecting with this version. There are thunderstorms north of me (About 40 miles ) and I can clearly see the static crashes on the panadapter. But,,,,,,with the Voice Squelch enabled along with NR2, I don't hear them in the audio!
The net I have been listening to sounds like people sitting in the room with me and talking.
I have never had anything work like this on HF SSB before.
Sorry to carry on, but this really is amazing to me.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Warren on the design of the voice squelch. I'm on the road right now and away from a real keyboard, but when I return I will provide a more detailed description of the DSP involved and provide some guidelines for it's use.

Much like NR2 I believe this is the only implementation available in amateur radio outside of using commercial gear. Thetis and its developers continue lead the way!

I also want to thank´s Richie and all the others involved on the project, Thetis is one amazing peace of
software, but we need to adjust and use it correctly.

I have make a small video with Voice Squelch in action,, and i can tell you,, i still didn´t get use to it,
the "sound" of silence is strange, it is like the radio just turn off or the VAC have gaps,,, just amazing.

I also have other videos with Thetis on my channel.

Regards.

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this, but does Richie's latest 2.9.0.8 Release incorporate any of Steve's G7KLJ improvements, and/or vise versa?

Put differently, are there now two distinct and separate branches of Thetis, neither of which include any of the recent enhancements incorporated in the other branch?

And if that's the case, then going forward, will the typical Thetis user likely have to decide up-front which branch of Thetis he will align his operations with, at the cost of painting himself out of the unique features offered by the other branch?

Just trying to plan for the future.

Mark,
Great question, I apologize if this is the wrong place for this, also. But, both versions, etc. have great updates/upgrades and are very much appreciated. It would be great to get the best of both versions incorporated into one, if possible. Anyway, thanks to all for the work with Thetis.

Thetis v2.9.0.8 - meters and then some more

Postby Jim » Tue Jun 13, 2023 2:13 pm

Installed the final 2.9.0.8 64 version and the new VSQL is really nice.

Couple of items observed.

(1) Thetis resolution off when opening to full screen. Reminds me of old CGA. Clicking RX2 on and off reverts it to normal or clicking to reduced screen size and back to full screen. Never seen this going back several years using Thetis or PowerSDR. Wish I could figure this one out but at least we have a work around.

(2) My tune slider missing. Copied my skins from the 2.9.0.8 64-bit beta into this final version and now the tune slider is back in place.

(3) All 60-meter 5 channel presets off by 100 hz and unable to change screen resolution off 1X. Opening 60-meter band stacks, going to options, unlocking and editing each channel to proper frequency and changing screen to .5x (my preferred) on each channel locking each one and now all is well. Using .5x I have one view of all 5 channels. Thinking about this I may have also had to do this on the beta version or even earlier versions?

I think some of the issues people are seeing and having to correct, are related to changes in the way settings etc are stored in the database. Ritchie mentioned in his post and on Github that things like Meters and their settings would have to be redone. I experienced that. Once I added Meters back to Thetis, they and their settings stay. ( and come back on restart)
It is possible the changes have effected other settings as well.
