Current consumption not showing

Postby JJ4SDR » Tue Dec 19, 2023 2:01 am

Just noticed that the GUI does indicate voltage but not current. Any thoughts on ways to remedy that?

JJ,

My meter does show 7.6 amps during TX (at 42 watts output), but shows 0.0 during RX -- I've always just assumed that the current draw during RX was something less than 0.1 amp so the meter just registers 0.0 (but I could be wrong, as you well know!).

I have a 7000 DLE and it draws 1.2 amps on RX. I checked it against a known digital current meter. You have to go into the calibration tab and adjust the two settings for the current to get it to read correctly on low (RX) and high (TX).

Thanks for the tip... with offset 222 it now shows the correct RX current for my 7k too. 73 Leon

When I was looking into this and coding up the adjustment controls I used an ammeter to get the current values for idle/rx, and then from 0w in 10w increments up to the max of my 7000dle. I then tweaked the offset and sensitivity values until the readings in Thetis closely matched. See attached pdf of the values I obtained. I need to get around to adding similar adjustment controls for the volts reading at some point.

For newer radios where the readings are completely out of whack, there is an option to log readings to VALog.txt. To make any use of this, an ammeter + voltmeter would also need to be used, and the values recorded along with time+seconds, so that a match could be made into the log file. The ammeter/volt readings and the log file could then be sent in so I can try and look into resolving it. There doesn't seem to be any impetus from anyone to get this issue resolved however as the logging option has been there since October. It was the first entry in the change log for v2.10.2.2.

Thanks for the pdf Ramdor!
Your messurement values are better than i have found, offset 240 & Sens 84 is indeed more accurate.

You have to alternate between offset and sensitivity during Rx and Tx to linearize the display on the bottom of the screen while monitoring an external current meter. Mine wound up being 251 and 76.

It's probably worth mentioning that there are now no less than three different current measurement chips in use across the 7000/Andromeda/G2 family, each with it's own scaling and calibration requirements. Unfortunately there is no way for the software (Thetis, piHPSDR, etc.) to know which one is in use. Thus current readings, and probably voltage as well, are kind of a crapshoot.

.......justoff topic. I can set my gain and offset correctly but I'm not doing something correctly to save the settings. Please where are those settings saved ?

Thanks all for feedback.

I was talking about current consumption during TX (CW/SSB). It shows 0A on both RX and TX, with the Thetis version I am using. With previous versions I did see amperage when in TX mode (I forget now if I paid much attention to that figure while in RX mode).

Mark,

Good to hear from you.

I may may use my Fluke at some point, to calibrate. Not that this is a major issue, but in case there is an issue, having the current consumption visible would be good.
