Thetis with Anan 10E 14 bit

Postby Bob - 5B4AGN » Thu Aug 08, 2024 12:19 pm

Here speaks the voice of inexperience and ignorance. Please indulge.

I have an Anan 10E 14 bit which I bought some 10 or so years ago and which until now has seen little use other than as a clean two-tone signal generator, used in assessing LDMOS amp linearity. Yes, I am deeply ashamed.

Finding time on my hands I have decided to try to get to know a little more about this SDR. I have downloaded and installed latest Thetis which seems to work fine on receive but not quite so well on transmit.

The Anan 10E with PowerSDR works well with mic/phones connected directly to the Anan. Under Thetis the phones continue to work fine but not the mic. Something is a little bit awry. If the mic is unplugged I see TX noise on the pan display when MOX is enabled. Gain and compression controls will vary the noise level. However, as soon as I plug in the mic the TX noise completely disappears as though the mic plug is shorting the mic input. Same mic, same plug and same connection to the 10E that works perfectly with Power SDR. Does Thetis expect something different?

I hunted through settings looking for something to adjust to correct the problem but drew a blank. In my reading, I found reference to Protocol 2 being needed for later versions of Thetis. On the general tab of the setup page I notice Thetis reported that F/W as 1.2 Protocol 1. Ahah I thought perhaps this is the problem, so I searched for what appears to be Protocol 2 F/W and found V1.3. I managed to download the bootloader, took a deep breath and loaded V1.3. Now Thetis reports V1.3 Protocol 1 and the mic situation is unchanged.

I am unsure what to do next, which brings me here. Advice gratefully received.

Thanks.

The microphone issue is now resolved. I was using a standard PC style electret which has the live side of the electret connected to both tip and ring of its connector. PowerSDR is quite happy with this whereas Thetis, it seems, is not. I connected a second electret mic between tip and ground only and this works fine. Perhaps some kind of phantom power issue??

Anyway, I have now progressed to a new problem though not associated with Thetis so a different category of inquiry is probably appropriate.

Hi Bob,

Apologies for the lack of responses from the community—perhaps the 10e is becoming a bit rare these days. I'll add a note on Thetis' GitHub to check the old PowerSDR source and see if anything was overlooked when selecting the 10e in Thetis. Thanks for the update.

No worries Richie and thanks for taking time to respond. As you suggest, the 10E is far from being the rig of the moment these days.
Thank you for all the work you do with Thetis. I am seriously impressed and thoroughly enjoying learning to use it. Who knows, perhaps I'll be inspired to invest in more up to date hardware.
