The Forum is BACK, and better than ever!

Post by w-u-2-o »

Hi all,

I'm sure you've noticed that the forum has been extremely unstable for the last couple of months. Weird SQL errors, slow page loads, or just plain unavailable. And it has been completely offline for the last few day.

You know the old saying, "No pain, no gain!" The reason the forum has been down the last few days is because it has been completely re-hosted on a new server. Everything is shiny, up-to-date, and tip-top. And I intend for it to stay that way!

One of the obvious changes is that the style of the forum is a little different. That is a consequence of updating the forum to the latest version of phpBB. The good news is, as I have time available, I plan to add other styles that each member can individually choose from. So you will not be stuck with this boring, basic style (it's literally called "basic") for very long.

There will be other improvements as well. Each new addition will be announced here so that folks will know about them.

If you encounter any problems, or just want to say how much faster the page load times are :D , please feel free to reply in this topic.

Undoubtedly there will be some fine tuning necessary. Don't be shy!

Thank you all for your patience!

Scott

Scott, thank you for all your hard work on this problem. I was beginning to think that the forums and all of the information here would be lost for good. It is a wonderful resource that many, including myself, rely on.
Well done!

Yes it is back , better and faster! Thanks for the hard work to make our forum clear, concise and easy to use. I've got to say this is the best organized forum I've seen to date. Thanks again Scott!

Thank you, everyone, for the very kind words, they are most appreciated :)

No, I do not have total control over the forum. Apache still owns the domain name. However, please don't be shy about posting complaints and issues. Not that Apache would notice, as they seem to take almost no interest in actually participating on the forum. Posts do not have to be full of happiness and joy, but they must be polite and factual. Such posts are always welcome as far as I am concerned. Posts that are hateful, vitriolic and profane are not welcome. And, just to be crystal clear, Apache has only acted a single time to suppress a single individual who was apparently posting some really hateful stuff. Given that there are plenty of existing posts on the site that are critical of Apache says to me that, again, as long as things are polite, civilized, and factual, there will be no issues. That said, I do hope that Apache will soon take an interest in using the forum as a means to improve their communications with the community.

Scott, I have noticed that some of the links to other threads in the forums from someone's post do not go to the thread being referenced. I imagine that has something to do with the change from one provider to another.
Overall the new forums are very nice and responsive.

James,

Would you mind posting a link or two the posts with the bad links, please? I just tried a few myself and they all worked, so I'd like to take a look at the ones you found that seem broken.

Thanks,

I hope it works this time. I tried posting the link previously and it was messed up.

"viewtopic.php?t=5348"

Originally it would show not found.
Hopefully, it will show correctly this time.
The issue is in the second post in the thread from you.
The links you provided go nowhere. Yet, looking to the referenced thread, the posts are there.

Thanks, I will investigate!

Update: yep, confirmed broken

Old links enclosed in URL tags are fine. Most old "naked" links are also fine. Some "naked" links have been malformed by the transfer/update process.

You can work around the problem by clicking the link, allowing the resulting page to load, then manually correcting the URL by deleting the front portion up through and including the "%3A".

I'm currently researching a better solution to this.

I haven't read all the above. I notice that the 'New Posts' no longer show as highlighted in a yellowish color before reading.

Are you logged in? If you are not logged in then this feature will not work because the forum doesn't know who you are and what you haven't seen.

Yes, I think so.
