L & R Speaker stopped working

Post by NN3RP »

I must have damage something inside but how?

For as long as I have had the 7000DLE, I've been using an external speaker via the connectors on the back of the radio (L & R). Today, there was no sound coming from the speaker. I know the speaker is working since I can use it with another radio. The front and rear headphones ports (HP) work fine.

I tried every imaginable way to bring back sounds to no avail. The setting on Thetis (v2.10.3.10) about "Disable audio amplifier (rear speaker sockets) is not checked.

Fer now, I am using VAV to send sounds to local PC sound card. I will keep trying.

I thank you in advance for your ideas / support.

It's possible that U21, the TPA0202 amplifier chip, has failed. This can happen because the connector used by Apache is terribly confusing. The TRS connectors must only have the tip and ring across the speaker coil. Grounding either the tip or ring, even through a speaker coil, can lead to eventual failure of the TPA0202.

Thanks for the pointer to the schematic, Scott.

As mentioned, I have been using this speaker setup for several years without any issue. But nothing is eternal :(

I found the amplifier chip on Amazon; is this what we are talking about?: amplifier TPA0202 It is also being sold in other websites (shipped from China)

I wouldn't go and swap the chip without opening up the 7000 and confirming that is the problem.

Per the original TI data sheet that appears to be the correct package style. A quick Google search will net you that data sheet in just a few seconds.

Is there a way / how to confirm the problem once I open the 7000?

I am incline to leave it as it is and just continue using the front port for my speakers.
