Thetis on G2

Postby KA5KKT » Fri Jul 12, 2024 4:54 pm

Please excuse my ignorance.

I understand the G2 has Linux and Raspberry Pi built in for standalone operation. When operating form a Windows PC doe the G2 operate with the Windows version of Thetis?

Yes,

You need to run the P2APP on the G2 Raspberry Pi then start Thetis on the Windows computer.

Thanks, George.

Does the P2APP run from the connected Windows PC?

P2APP is run from the radio's Raspbian Linux desktop. It is what provides the data stream over the network that Thetis expects to see when you start Thetis on your pc.
There should be a shortcut on your front panel display for P2APP when you close PiHPSDR.

Dick,

The entire point of the G2 was to move some of the processing that has always been in a big, expensive FPGA into a general purpose processor (GPP), in this case the Pi that's inside of the G2, thereby allowing the use of a less expensive, smaller FPGA.

The old way:

Big Expensive FPGA<-->Client Software (Thetis or piHPSDR, etc.)

The G2 way:

Small Cheap FPGA<-->Pi<-->piHPSDR-G2-Version

or

Small Cheap FPGA<-->Pi<-->p2app on the Pi<-->Thetis

Dick,

Here is an alternate approach for running Thetis on your G2:

1) Load Thetis on your Windows PC. Load you other apps (e.g., Voicemeeter, WSJT-X) here also
2) Connect your G2 to the Windows PC using the LAN ports
3) Power up the G2
4) Click on the Thetis icon on the Windows PC display after the G2 boots up (about 10 seconds)
5) The G2 will open running Thetis
6) In the Thetis Setup > General > HW/Select box click Anan G2

You don't need the Linux O/S apps (e.g., p2app) to run Thetis or any supporting apps on your PC
You don't need any displays connected to the G2 Pi

Good luck,

What you are describing is for the G2 without the front panel. It auto starts P2APP after the radio boots up. On the G2 with a front panel, you have to close PiHPSDR before running P2APP so it can make the radio visible to Thetis over the network.

Thanks Ron and Trucker,

These seem like instructions I can follow.

Does the G2, Plain Face come with P2APP resident on it? Otherwise...the picture is beginning to come into focus.

The G2 displays via an icon on the windows PC ~10 seconds after the G2 is started. If so, that's an important part of the equation that I hadn't known. Does the Raspbian Linux desktop simultaneously show on the desktop? Perhaps that's where the G2 icon appears.

Dick,

If you plug a display, keyboard and mouse into the black face G2, you get the Linux OS, the P2APP and the piHPSDR software. Not sure if you have to break the LAN connection to the Windows PC because I never tried to access the Linux OS in a standalone mode.

The G2 does not display an icon on the Windows PC. Just click on the Thetis icon and the G2 radio responds.

Yes, the G2 without a front panel display already has P2APP installed and it will automatically start P2APP when you first turn on the radio. You don't need to have a keyboard, mouse and monitor connected to the radio for anything, except when the radio itself needs to be updated.
The procedure for starting and shutting down the radio is covered in the manual that you can download from Apache Labs main website. (It is listed on the left side of the web page)
If you haven't downloaded the manual yet, you really need to do so. It covers everything for both the radio with a front panel display and the radio without the front panel display.
Either radio is fairly easy to get going. Although you do have to make a few settings in Thetis to get it setup for your radio.
