How to monitor several bands using Thetis?

Postby Michael » Fri Sep 27, 2024 7:25 pm

Maybe a stupid question and based on my ignorance.

I (hopefully) soon will receive a G2 and use the remaining waiting time to get accustomed with Thetis (as you know - anticipation is the most beautiful joy).

I know how to use 2 VFOs and 2 RXs but wonder how to monitor different bands e.g in different panafalls or as outputs to third party software such as CW skimmer. This would allow to monitor different bands while operating on one, very useful in contests. With Thetis it appears only possible to monitor one additional band using RX2 or do I misunderstand something? Calling up two or more Thetis instances is obviously causing port violation.

Maybe somebody could shed some light on this.

This post is a little dated, but 98% of it still applies, with the notable exception that specific DDC assignments have changed in Thetis.

Bottom line is that only two bands can be monitored simultaneously. If this is being done with a single ADC (same antenna) then bandpass filtering needs to be set to bypass.

Thanks, Scott - indeed very useful. I am on a steep learning curve and this helps greatly to better understand the basics of SDRs.

If understood correctly, it would be possible to monitor more than two bands simultaneously as the hardware supports it but it is not (maybe - not yet) implemented in Thetis. In SetUp -> General -> ADC per default (using ANAN G2 in H/W select) RX1 is assigned to DDC2 and RX2 to DDC3 (DDCs counted from DDC0 to DDC6). Is there other software (or Thetis derivatives/addons) which allow the user to utilize more DDCs in separate panadapters or at least support the output of the data stream into other software?

G2 already has 10 full function DDCs. As far as I know, Thetis will only use 4 of them in protocol 2.

LinHPSDR would use rather more of them, but I haven't heard anything of that client app for a long time now.

protocol 1 had up to 7 DDCs, but several of them were allocated for fixed functions; in protocol 2 in Thetis the same DDCs are re-used for different purposes. Warren's channelmaster document describes how they can be used.

Hi Michael,

There is an app called SparkSDR that can handle all 10 of the
G2's DDCs (receivers). It does many digital modes as well as
SSB & CW.

Great - Thanks, Rick - just a minute ago a German SDR expert gave me the same hint. I will take a look but assume that noise filtering, pure signal, and diversity reception will not be on the same level (if implemented at all) as in Thetis.

Cheers,

Michael
