UPDATE #2: Zombie & Duplicate Accounts Removal Status

Post by w-u-2-o »

As of the time and date of this update, 1100 EDT 19 SEP 2025:

379 zombie accounts have been deleted. These accounts had no logins and no posts and all were years old.

30 duplicate accounts have been deleted. These accounts had no logins for 3 or more years, and no posts.

21 duplicate accounts remain for further action. These will take a bit longer because they have posts that need to be moved to the primary (most recent login date and number of posts) account of the user. More to follow when these are done.

While it's unlikely that anyone will notice the deletion of these accounts given their age, lack of usage, and zero post count, if you feel you have been affected in some way by this process please do not hesitate to reach out via the "Contact us" link on the forum.

PREVIOUS MESSAGES FOLLOW:

Hi everyone,

There are 379 "zombie" accounts on the forum. These are accounts that have been created, but the creator never came back to log in even a single time. They have no posts associated with them, of course. And, since the account owner never logged in, there are no subscriptions associated with them, either. Thus these accounts are unlikely to be missed by anyone ;)

Therefore, sometime on Friday, 19 Sep 2025, these accounts will be summarily deleted.

People are certainly welcome to log into their accounts and thereby keep them alive. For those who have forgotten their password, there is a convenient "forgot my password" link on the login page. And people are always welcome to reregister if and when they have renewed interest in actively participating.

UPDATE: after the zombie accounts are deleted, there are 51 duplicate accounts that have been located, identified, and fed into our fire control system. :D

Most of these duplicate accounts were most likely created by folks who either a) forgot they had an account or b) forgot their password and no longer had access to the email address originally used to set up the account. The password recovery feature on the old server was also intermittent and the admin email address didn't work at all. These are no longer problems on the new server. :)

Starting Friday, 19 Sep 2025, all duplicate accounts will be deleted as follows:

- The older of the duplicate accounts will be deleted (51 accounts). Most of these are older by a year or more.
- If there are any posts associated with the older account their ownership will be transferred to the remaining account (21 of the 51 dup. accounts).

If anyone encounters any difficulties after this forum clean-up, please use the "Contact us" link to reach out.
