Hello all,
i'm Roger (KB7JD)and I am looking for a solution to my 7000dle low output power I suspect is tied up with the mic settings/signal input because a "tune" signal drives the xmtr to the same level as the power out slider is set to, but in ssb voice mode it is about only 1/3 of that setting. I've checked all the normal settings and I'm missing something still. Any audio gurus out there that can help out here. I'm permanently locked in at A QRP LEVEL!!

answering questions about mi
1. + Details: The mic is a Heil HM-10 dynamic so the bias is off (ps; question: Is it true if it is ever left ON that it causes little effect initially, but over a period of time it will destroy the mike? Just wondering & trying to remember when first starting 3 years ago what may have happened (bad, NEW mic already!?). Testing a few days ago (before my first update.... suspected needed it badly after 3-4 years since purchases, but only about 10 hrs tot use due to a long story), the mic did yield a low figure: ie: 30 watts drive (on main screen slider) yielded only about 10 watts out. I know this isn't cw, but rather ssb phone, however, that is awfully low, unless it is expected that I should use the compressor or other feature, right?
2. Its plugged in to the front mic mini-phone jack. When I bought I had a HRO recommended audio cable shop make the cable for the mini mic jack needed on the Anan & also a PTT hand switch (vs a foot switch) made up which is connected on the back of the Anan (recently used just the main screen MOX button for the momentary tests being done with all these problems right now). FYI: in certain setups (tried a bunch) there is a low modulation with the mic (as I mentioned at the beginning above), but insufficient, as said.
3. Mic wiring" was done by the audio co. stated above so I don"t know, but it does put out something in some settings, just low. Can you verify its functionality by anything onboard (maybe a software meter or something that can be switched in)? [/b][/u]It will surprise me if its faulty as its only had maybe 20 hrs or total use since I started back when I put together the station 3-4 yrs ago and worked fine, just sat here through lots of family problems & antenna systems rebuilding.
4. The Heil mic built-in PTT was disabled during the shop's wiring job. No problem here...the mic worked fine in the Anan as built w/o it several years ago.
The mic bias is turned off in the Anan and, of course, doesn't need it as it is a dynamic mic.
5. Ok...some misc fiindings on operating the Anan: I'm quite impressed to believe that the problem is in the set up audio or accompanying windows. I must state that since I recently contacted you I finally did my first update download, to further com;plicate things, probably. I use the VAC1 & 2 rather than an external audio interface (as many hams) and I believe it has complicated things (thought it would simplify as all would be inside the original hardware (just Anan & computer). Both vac's are used as another ham acquaintance helped install Omnirig & FLDigi. Note that this caused problems in the final HF Log4OM special settings that visually ID's the stations at the peak of their signals on the screen forgot what that's called, but a great feature! Sadly, this required that to redone, but is now lost due to searching for the recent mic problems!! It's a jungle madhouse for a newbie!
Some findings with the audio signaals lost after the update are that FM, AM & digital signals thru VAC's are heard via the speakers (plugged in at the rear of the Anan if VAC 1 driver & i/o's are set up in certain positions, but SSB only thru the computer headphones if theVAC1 output setting is on the computer used NVIDIA h.d. (operator listed) setting is chosen. The mic on the FM, AM & digital signals was very faintly registering, but nothing on SSB. I worry about changing the VAC 1 & 2 settings as this someimpacted the operation of digital signals, as was stated earlier, requiring a re-do I don/t care to repeat.
Ok, so that's it for now. Let me know asap on what, when and how you can try to look at this. Thanks!

The situation needs to be simplified in order to debug this problem.
1. Leave VAC off.
2. In Setup > Transmit ensure the source is Mic In and that 20dB Mic Boost is ON (the latter is necessary for dynamic mic's).
3. On the main console, ensure COMP, VOX, DEXP and TX EQ are OFF. Ensure MIC is ON, and set gain initially to 0dB.
In Setup > General > H/W Select tab set Bias to OFF, set PTT to OFF (use the MOX button). Try both the tip and ring settings because you don't seem to know how the microphone is wired, so it could be either one.
If this does not lead to success, then the next step would be to start with a fresh install of the latest version of Thetis, to be found here: https://github.com/ramdor/Thetis/releases/
With this version of Thetis you can use the built-in database manager to back up your old database and create a new, virgin database to test with.
Make the most minimal changes to the database required for testing, as described above.

Scott, Ok, as per the setup given on your last message the mic works fine. So basically this is what I expected: The problem is probably in the VAC 1 & 2 SETUP and yes, I believed (and had set to & formerly was working when) the mic selection was/is on "tip". The Vac's were set up to be able to use both Hf & digtal
(flDigi) and recently tested ok on both (digi whiny signals heard also). I hope not to lose this as the first digi installation knocked off some of the capabilities of Log4OM signal path tracing, etc. That was fixed upon my return to the quite sometime later all was still well EXEPT THE MIC PROBLEM (low drive low gain). Anywan, where do ou want to proceed from here. Thanks!

Scott, the only appreciablee thing I changed was to turn both the VAC's off. I've got yet to test fldigi for operation with that change as I believe we set the VAC's up to handle that mode.However, I lost the speaker outputs in doing this, but I hae the Anan's headphones for now. Go figure. Who is a VAC specilist i oout grooup you could send me to? Thanks!

Again, if I understand you correctly:
- The mic works fine with VAC OFF.
- The mic does NOT work properly with VAC ON.
Is that correct?
If so, then it's because you are a bit confused about how VAC works.
Normally, when running phone of any type, and with the mic plugged into the ANAN, VAC should be OFF. You can accomplish this by saving a TX Profile for phone, as it will save the VAC state, among many other things.
Similarly, when running digital modes of any type, there can be a TX Profile for this where VAC is ON.
Here is a video that covers how to use TX Profiles. I strongly recommend you do this, i.e. have a separate TX Profile for phone and another for digi modes.
As Thetis is super flexible and complex, there is yet another way to handle this problem. The VAC implementation has options that allow a phone transmission to override VAC, depending upon how PTT is asserted (MOX, PTT switch, etc.) These are illustrated in the image below. The original purpose of this feature is so that contesters could use a voice keyer via VAC, but immediately override it with a normal transmission from the microphone when necessary. Thus you could leave VAC ON, connected to your digi mode app's, and still transmit with the mic. However, the limitation with this method is that you have to choose to use normal USB or LSB modes for BOTH situations, OR choose DIGU (nobody uses DIGL). This is a major limitation, therefore I can't recommend it.
